New Leaders Selected for PC-FACS

Earlier this year, AAHPM sought nominations for a new PC-FACS editor in chief as the editor in chief at the time, Amy Abernethy, MD FACP FAAHPM, announced she was transitioning out of her role. That decision gave the Academy the opportunity to review the current process and outline a new editorial process moving forward.

The Publications Committee, chaired by Jay Thomas, MD PhD, was asked to spearhead the project. The committee decided to create an editorial team (set up similarly to a journal) and accepted applications for editor in chief, associate editor in chief, senior section editors, associate editors, and ad hoc reviewers.

Donna Zhukovsky, MD FACP FAAHPM, was selected to serve as the editor in chief. With the approval of the Publications Committee, she selected Mellar P. Davis, MD FACP FAAHPM, as associate editor in chief, and Drs. Zhukovsky and Davis appointed Egidio Del Fabbro, MD; Francine Rainone, DO PhD MS FAAHPM; Paul Tatum, MD MSPH CMD FAAHPM; Tommie Farrell, MD; Christina Ullrich, MD MPH; Thomas Strouse, MD; and Stephen Bekanich, MD, as senior section editors.

Associate editors include Amy Abernethy, MD FACP FAAHPM; Robert Arnold, MD FAAHPM; Michael Ashburn, MD MPH MBA; Steven Braumrucker, MD FAAFP FAAHPM; Janet Bull, MD; Ira Byock, MD FAAHPM; Valencia Clay, MD; Fidel Davila, MD MSMM FCCP FCCM FACPE CPE; Rony Dev, DO; James D’Olimpio, MD FACP; Hunter Groninger, MD; Daniel Handel, MD; Laura Hanson, MD MPH; Stephanie Harman, MD FACP; Khurram Khan, MD; Marcia Levetown, MD FAAP FAAHPM; Jane Loitman, MD MBA FAAHPM; Dana Lustbader, MD; Charles Mills, MD FACP; Cameron Muir, MD; Alan Nixon, MD FAAHPM; David Nowels, MD; Aaron Olden, MD; Joel Policzer, MD FACP FAAHPM; Eric Prommer, MD; Eric Roeland, MD; Sandra Sanchez-Reilly, MD; Eric Widera, MD; and Gordon Wood, MD MSCI.

AAHPM Board of Directors Renews Strategic Plan

Thank you to all the members who provided feedback on AAHPM’s Strategic Plan. This information was reviewed and incorporated into the final version of the new plan, which was approved by the AAHPM Board of Directors at its November 2011 meeting. The plan will serve as a guiding map for the future direction of the Academy. To access a copy of it, visit the Members Only section at aahpm.org.

The Strategic Plan comprises the five goals and core purpose listed here, which will provide AAHPM’s direction for the next 5 years.

Core Purpose
To improve the care of patients with life-threatening or serious conditions through advancement of hospice and palliative medicine.

Strengthen Member Engagement
Hospice and palliative care stakeholders will value membership and engage with AAHPM.

Build Workforce and Leadership
AAHPM will strive to attract, develop, and retain a sufficient workforce composed of competent leaders— including clinicians, educators, and researchers—to expand access to those who could benefit from hospice and palliative care.

Advance Knowledge and Competence
AAHPM educates physicians within all career stages and practice settings to achieve high levels of competence in hospice and palliative medicine.

Promote Quality of Care and Evidence-Based Practice
AAHPM promotes training in, funding for, and dissemination of research that expands the evidence base of the field and improves the quality of hospice and palliative care.

Increase Advocacy and Awareness
AAHPM expands awareness, understanding, acceptance, funding support, and utilization of palliative medicine and hospice.

Academy leaders envision our future as a world where all seriously ill individuals and their families will have access to high-quality, evidence-based hospice and palliative care.
