A Matter of Choice In his 35th year of practicing law, Rick Ross, partner at SNR Denton, and global chair of the firm’s hotel and leisure practice, says he still loves what he does and that he gets to live in Phoenix doing it. “An unusual aspect of our Phoenix based team of our hotel group is that its only connection to Phoenix is that this is where we choose to live. Virtually all our clients are somewhere else in the world,” Ross says. The firm is here because its people want to be here, and we are committed to growing our Phoenix office with other lawyers whose clients would benefit from our national and global platform. Ross said that he was really excited that Terry Goddard recently joined the Phoenix office. “He’s a great lawyer with a wealth of special experience from his years as Arizona’s Attorney General. Best of all, he’s a wonderful person. He is a perfect fit for us.” SNR Denton was formed in September 2010 when U.S. based Sonnenschein Nath and Rosenthal combined with London based Denton Wilde & Sapte. The firm serves clients in key business and financial centers from more than 60 locations worldwide, through offices, associate firms and special alliances across the US, the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Russia and the CIS, Asia Pacific and Africa, making us a top 25 legal services provider by lawyers and professionals. The firm’s mission is to become the leading global law firm of choice to clients seeking quality legal services in the markets in which they operate - providing exceptional value and client service, and a keen understanding of the client’s business and its individual needs. The firm focuses on the following sectors: energy; transport and infrastructure; financial institutions and funds; government; health and life sciences; insurance; manufacturing; real estate, retail and hotels; and technology, media, and telecommunications.Services provided within these sectors include banking and finance; capital markets; corporate and business transactions; employment, benefits and executive compensation; intellectual property and technology; litigation and arbitration; public policy and regulation; real estate; restructuring and insolvency; tax matters; trusts and estate; venture technology; and the firm provides special situations teams as required by client needs. SNR Denton was also a matter of choice for Ross. He says he was looking for the right firm not only for himself, but also for his team and his clients. “One of the key reasons I came to this firm six years ago was because I felt they had exceptionally strong leadership. It was not just a person, but a group of people,” he says. This firm amazed me with the quantity and quality of great lawyers who were also great leaders.” Ross adds that in his view, “a lot of people (partners and associates) don’t focus enough on firm leadership, and I feel strongly that this is a key aspect of any firm achieving success in the highly competitive world of practicing law today - whether you have 10 lawyers, 110 lawyers or 1,010 lawyers in your firm.” The firm seeks to leverage its abilities and global reach to broaden its relationships with current clients by offering them expanding global services combined with local representation. SNR Denton has seen continued growth during the recent economic downturn and has added 100 partners worldwide since the combined firm launched in September 2010. The firm continues to actively seek out new lawyers to expand the depth and breadth of its geography and expertise. A Matter of Style Ross’ hotel & leisure practice has a goal of becoming the #1 group of hotel lawyers in the world. “We aspire to being who the hotel industry views is the ‘best in class’ when picking legal counsel – anywhere,” Ross says. “Clearly, one of the keys to our success is how we use our geography and size - it is our firm’s collaborative culture - and that we truly play as teammates. I don’t care how many super-stars a team has, if they don’t play as a team, they don’t win championships. The same is true for law firms.” Ross adds that SNR Denton has the best of all possible worlds. It has a roster of individual champions in their field, yet individuals who embrace functioning as a team, for achieving the goals of their clients. The SNR Denton team is one of only two firms in the country consistently recognized by Chambers as Band 1 nationally in the hotel & leisure sector, and Ross is personally rated as Band 1 nationally as well. He and the firm have earned that recognition every year since Chambers started evaluating this sector. Ross says that this success is due to his practicing with an exceptional group of partners and associates who are truly committed to playing as a team. He specifically acknowledged his partner, Meghan Cocci, who manages the Phoenix office and helps him run the global hotel practice, and of course his wife, Carolyn who he says is the ultimate “life team mate.” Another key component to the firm’s success has been the intense level of mentoring more experienced lawyers give to new members of the team. The goal is to enhance the abilities, skills and knowledge base of each lawyer to teach him or her to become industry experts. Ross says that they mentor their associates to understand the legal and business issues from the eyes of the client. He says he is big on the word “why”- not just “what” and that his associates and clients would strongly confirm this. Ross added that he feels that partners need to be passionate about mentoring the younger lawyers they work with, and take it as seriously as anything they do vfor their clients. He says “partners need to appreciate that these younger lawyers are entrusting in us their future careers, and it is up to us to own the responsibility to give them the training and guidance they need to be the best lawyer they can be.” But, he adds, “Each lawyer needs to own his/ her career and recognize that a mentor can only be as good as his or her mentee.” He feels that the mentoring process is really a two-way street that both parties need to fully commit to. A Matter of Priorities SNR Denton has two priorities: its clients and its people. Care and handling of each is essential to the survival and growth of the firm in the coming decades. “We strive to offer our lawyers and professionals at all levels a culture of collaboration and collegiality where they can thrive. We create a place where diversity, a learning environment, community service and good citizenship are all promoted,” Ross says. Ross notes that the firm has a clear sense that in today’s world, and tomorrow’s, clients seek something more from their legal counsel. Clients want trusted advisors who truly understand their particular business, as well as the complex issues they face in a variety of jurisdictions with diverse laws that they confront and which may undergo sudden and unexpected change. In addition, they expect their counsel to provide exceptional service while delivering value added counsel at a reasonable price. Ross says that not every firm will be able to figure out how to do this, but that he proudly believes that SNR Denton is and will continue to be one of those firms.
