DeShon L. Pullen DeShon Pullen & Associates, PLC Award-Winning Firm with a Heart of Gold The family law firm of DeShon Pullen & Associates, PLC— formed in 2002 by DeShon Pullen—is fast establishing itself as a bona-fide, family law leader. Perhaps it’s no wonder. The firm, which provides comprehensive family law representation throughout the Phoenix and Scottsdale areas, has a true, committed, family-oriented expert at the helm. “I always felt passionate about family law,” Pullen said. “Growing up I was very poor, after my parents divorced when I was three years old. I know what it’s like to go through stress as a child. I understand the troubles these families are going through and it makes me a more effective attorney.” As a former commercial litigator at Arizona’s largest law firm, Pullen has an established reputation for excellence. The knowledgeable, family law attorney is a sustaining member of Arizona’s Finest Lawyers with a “Superb 10.0” Avvo rating. Just last year and again this year, North Valley Magazine identified Pullen as one of five top family law attorneys in the Valley. Pullen takes pride in these achievements and the fact that she is certified in family law. The certification was a pursuit she undertook in order to give her clients added peace of mind. “I found that my clients felt more comfortable with a certified practitioner,” she said. “After I did it, I was so glad. Reading through 300 cases on family law gives you so much more knowledge; even if you’ve been practicing for years.” With more than two decades of combined experience, all of the attorneys at DeShon Pullen & Associates are meticulous in their research and investigation methods. They work hard, poring over the often overlooked, smaller details that can prove to be the deciding factors in a hard-fought case. As a result, Pullen and her dedicated colleagues have built their practice on a steady stream of repeat referrals. Pullen attributes this to the fact that her firm values lasting relationships with their clients; relationships that more often than not, evolve into true friendships. “Clients tend to be very happy with us,” Pullen says. “Although we work very hard, our environment is low-key. We’re not as formal or stuffy as lawyers’ offices traditionally are.” Caring, Aggressive Representation Pullen started her family law career as a solo practitioner. This was prior to, and during the two-year span in which she was having her two children; her now ten-year-old son named Aaedon, and nine-year-old daughter named Tasia. Shortly after her daughter was born, Pullen hired a nanny, returned to work, and began adding people to her practice. At its base, DeShon Pullen & Associates operates with the understanding that family law issues are complex and fraught with emotional difficulties. This acknowledgment played a significant role in the decisions Pullen made as she was building her firm. Pullen made it a point to actively seek out only “top-notch” candidates. She was committed to only working with practitioners with proven reputations for fearlessness and compassion. To the delight of their clients, and the chagrin of opposing counsel, Pullen and her staff are known for exceeding expectations. The attorneys and staff employ meticulous, “no stone unturned” levels of preparation, coupled with aggressive representation. As a mother, however, Pullen acknowledges that this is only half the battle. She is intimately aware of the important role that the emotional well-being of the client—and their family—plays in the process. “When a client comes in crying and upset, our hearts go out to them. We are not afraid to hug our clients and let them know we understand that they are going through a lot,” she said. “We know when they are not in the mood for a strategy session and a lot of legal terminology, and we respond to that.” She understands this is a weighty and sensitive part of the family law process. She also believes it to be one of the hidden reasons why some cases sink, and others sail smoothly to a just resolution. To this end, Pullen has compiled a team of hard-workers who are compassionate, who will listen, and who know first-hand what it takes to carry a family through hardship and turmoil. Most of the lawyers and staff at DeShon Pullen & Associates are parents themselves and operate with an intrinsic understanding of the issues facing their clients. “I think it’s important that we don’t get overly caught up in legalese, but simply show that we care,” Pullen said. “If you don’t have the capacity to make a client feel better, then maybe family law is not your area. My staff and I care deeply, so it comes naturally.” According to Pullen, this established two-part strategy serves as the basis for the firm’s unmitigated success and stellar reputation for client satisfaction. “Clients always thank us for making the entire ordeal less miserable,” she said. She recalls with an air of fondness, one case in particular when a client, pleased with the outcome of her case, inquired of the staff, “Do you want steak or beer?” For Pullen, its times like these that make it all worth it. She points out that while her staff is busy tending to their clients’ needs, they also find time to take care of each other. “I think we all try to keep it light between us. We’re all very close,” she said. “There are times when we’re all beat by the end of the day and we’ll sit and have a glass of wine, and talk about it. It’s really nice when you are surrounded by coworkers who are your true friends and totally understand.” Giving and Receiving A large part of the firm’s underlying motivation is rooted in the collective desire to give back to their community. The firm is active in the Maricopa County Bar Association, the Volunteer Lawyers Program, local homeless shelters, ChildHelp programs and a number of other civic groups. “We are in touch with the needs of our city,” Pullen said. “And we believe our clients benefit from our involvement.” To this end, the firm maintains a steady stream of probono work at all times. Pullen cites this work with a touch of sentimentality in her voice. She said she’s thankful to be able to help heal those families that are down on their luck and just need a break. It keeps her close to the reason she got into this line of work in the first place. “There are a lot of people who have legal issues that need to be addressed that don’t have the funds,” she said. “I’m fortunate to have a lot of paid work, but I believe it’s always important to do work for people who can’t afford it. It’s some of the most rewarding work I’ve done.”
