When Melinda describes why she chose court reporting as her career, she explains how she desired a career that would be a rewarding investment of her time, energy and talent, one that would fulfill her desire for independence and success. Who knew she would end up falling in love with the profession?

Melinda graduated from the Court Reporting Institute of Houston in 1997 and became a Texas CSR in January of 1998. She gained invaluable experience working as a freelance court reporter for various agencies, including Independent Reporting in Houston, Texas and Wendy Ward Roberts & Associates in Dallas, Texas.

In 1999, Melinda married and moved to her husband’s hometown, Meridian, Mississippi, where she embarked on her lifelong dream of owning her own business. With a laptop and a drive to succeed, she started her business out of their two-bedroom apartment. She began to generate business by knocking on law firms’ doors and asking for the opportunity to earn their business.

She has built her court reporting business on her reputation for excellence and professionalism in Mississippi. When asked, she will tell you, “My business has grown over the years because I love what I do.” Melinda is a hardworking perfectionist with an unyielding dedication to the industry. She strives to deliver a perfect transcript on time every time.

“Giving back is essential to the survival and growth of our profession. When you love what you do, naturally, you want to share with others. I love the opportunity to mentor to upcoming reporters,” says Melinda. Essentially, court reporters have more confidence when they have experience; so Melinda provides them with it. They shadow her on jobs and in court and they have a deadline to turn in the finished transcript. Melinda critiques the transcript, and this phase continues until the transcript is perfect. Although this process can at times be gruesome, the ultimate payoff is a court reporter with the confidence to go into any room, calmly handle all the attorneys talking over each other and efficiently produce an accurate transcript. The ultimate real-life work experience!

Melinda’s love and passion for the profession motivates her to stay up-to-date on issues affecting court reporters. In Mississippi, the court reporting profession is ever-changing. This year, Melinda was elected to the board as secretary of the Mississippi Court Reporters Association. She is also serving as co-chair on the legislative committee and is currently pursuing legislation changes that will, upon passage, benefit both official and freelance court reporters.

The most important aspect of business, besides customer service, of course, is philanthropy! Giving back is at the top of Bowers Court Reporting’s business plan. This year alone, Bowers Court Reporting has contributed to Junior Auxiliary, Capital Area Bar Association, Hope Village, Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi, 15th Avenue Baptist Church, Steve Hull Memorial Golf Classic, Mississippi Association for Justice, 200 Million Flowers, Jackson Young Lawyers and First Baptist Church of Meridian. She also supports K-Love monthly.

Since 1999, the reporters and staff at Bowers Court Reporting have an established reputation for world-class customer service, efficiency and speed. Melinda says, “There are a lot of great court reporters and great court reporting firms in Mississippi.” She believes that putting your clients’ needs first and providing a quality product is essential for continued business. Melinda loves the opportunity to work with fellow court reporters in helping them to achieve success in their businesses and fulfill their dreams. In all areas of her life she believes this simple slogan, “If you don’t love it or if you’re not having fun, it’s not worth doing.” She believes she is achieving that through helping others. She believes it is important to lock arms with fellow court reporters and competitors so that we can better serve the legal community and our profession. She welcomes the opportunity to network. “We try to make networking a simple process,” says Melinda.

Anyone who knows Melinda can attest to her wonderful personality and positive attitude. There are no obstacles that she can’t overcome. For a small demonstration of her ability and desire to lift others up, take a quick look at Bowers Court Reporting Facebook page. As Melinda looks to the future of court reporting, she sees an ever-increasing desire for technology. Through early implementation of the latest technological advances in the field, Bowers Court Reporting remains on the cutting edge utilizing “the latest and greatest” equipment and software.
