Shelley Detwiller DiGiacomo and Nancy Pisaruk, partners in Detwiller, DiGiacomo & Pisaruk, PLLC (DDP Legal), believe teamwork is the key to their success. After working together for years, DiGiacomo and Pisaruk joined forces to create DDP Legal. Their career trajectories complement each other to create a boutique corporate and securities law firm that can provide client-centered, practical legal advice. DiGiacomo is an experienced corporate lawyer recently selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America for corporate law. She began her career working in large law firms in New York and London, as well as Phoenix. Pisaruk earned an MBA and worked as a staff attorney with the securities division of the Arizona Corporation Commission before joining a large Phoenix law firm. This unique combination of experience enables the two to provide quality legal advice that business clients value. “One of the things our clients have in common is the desire to work directly with experienced lawyers who understand their business needs,” said DiGiacomo. “When a client calls for advice, they know who will pick up the phone and who will handle their business needs whether complex or straightforward. It will be either Shelley or I,” said Pisaruk. “That’s practical and it makes good business sense.” With an emphasis on business and securities law, including commercial transactions, contracts, business formation, stock purchases, loan agreements, licensing agreements, supply and distribution agreements, the sale and acquisition of assets, and corporate governance, DiGiacomo and Pisaruk serve clients ranging from entrepreneurs in startup mode to large long-standing publicly held companies. No matter their size, their clients know that the advice they get will be client-centered and cost-effective and will draw on their vast and varied experience. DiGiacomo says, “We spend a lot of time working collaboratively and talking through matters. This makes practice enjoyable for us, and clients get the benefit of both of our backgrounds.” Forming DDP Legal gave DiGiacomo and Pisaruk firsthand experience in being entrepreneurs and an even greater understanding of the challenges that many of their small business clients face. This entrepreneurial experience enables them to assist clients from startup through exit strategy and serve as trusted advisors and savvy business professionals at every step in the process. Whether working to differentiate themselves in the market or coordinating to make certain the day-to-day operations fl ow seamlessly, DiGiacomo and Pisaruk have gained a valuable expanded perspective on what it takes to build a business from the ground up. One of the personal benefits of having their own firm is the additional flexibility both have to engage in the other aspects of their lives. Both attorneys devote many hours to pro bono and community work. DiGiacomo has spent a great deal of her time in support of The Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS as well as other local charities. In addition, DiGiacomo enjoys road cycling and has ridden in El Tour de Tucson every year since 2008. DiGiacomo also enjoys bird watching, especially at the Desert Botanical Garden, and spending time outdoors generally. Pisaruk provides startup advice to (and enthusiastically supports) several Phoenix animal charities. She is also a member of the Phoenix Boys Choir board of trustees. Pisaruk has two young children and volunteers her time as a Girl Scout leader. Pisaruk believes that DDP Legal is an example of how women lawyers can achieve a career in the law that also permits time for family and community involvement. DiGiacomo and Pisaruk approach their practice in a similar fashion. In DiGiacomo’s view the most rewarding part of practicing law is being a member of her clients’ teams and working collaboratively to find the best solution available to any legal problem affecting their businesses. Pisaruk also believes that teamwork is at the core of a successful practice. When asked what she finds most rewarding about being an attorney, Pisaruk says, “working side-by-side with my clients to really understand their business, their objectives, the challenges they face, and the opportunities they have before them is what I enjoy the most. I like to be a trusted adviser on their team.” Both women agree that underlying their success is a key principle, “It’s all about teamwork and making certain we understand the unique risks and obstacles faced by each of our clients. When we are able to take into consideration both the day to day challenges and the big picture goals of our clients, we are able to provide them with sound advice and a comprehensive approach that makes sense both from a business perspective and a legal perspective. That’s the winning combination that sets us apart.”
