With a thriving arts scene, one-of-a-kind shopping district, and an abundance of summertime festivals it all combines to make it a must-stop destination. If you’re looking for a tranquil escape along the Great Lakes Seaway Trail this summer, look no further than North East, Pennsylvania. Located in the northwestern corner of the state, it gets its name from its position in the northeastern part of Erie County. The area’s rich history lends itself to exploration. With a thriving arts scene, one-of-a-kind shopping district, and an abundance of summertime festivals it all combines to make it a must-stop destination. This area has long been known for its extremely fertile soil, which, combined with its close proximity to Lake Erie, has allowed the region to become an agricultural success. The countryside surrounding North East is brimming with orchards and vineyards. The area is part of the largest grape-growing region east of the Rockies. The city is situated in the heart of Lake Erie Wine Country, which stretches between western New York and eastern Pennsylvania. Lake Erie Wine Country includes more than 23 different wineries that each serve their unique wines, many of which boast French-American or European-style roots; eleven of those wineries lie in close proximity to the town of North East. The area’s long agricultural history is celebrated anew each year with the annual Cherry Festival in July and the annual Winefest in late September. There is a schedule of events throughout the year as well. Photo credit: North East Chamber of Commerce. North East’s residents claim that the sunsets here are the best in the world. They swear there’s nowhere else to find a view quite like that of the glowing sun slipping beneath the waves on Lake Erie—and plenty of visitors each year come to see for themselves. The town’s proximity to this great lake makes it a great place for more than just beautiful sunsets. There are plenty of beaches and waterfront attractions in the area to take advantage of. The fishing on Lake Erie is world-class, and the surrounding lakes, rivers and streams teem with plenty of fish, making the area an angler’s paradise. The full-service marina in town offers a place to dock or rent a boat and get out and enjoy the glistening waters of Lake Erie. North East is home to a rich history that paints a picture of America throughout the ages. The town takes pride in this heritage—so much so that the local high school’s sports teams are called the North East Grape Pickers. An homage to that historic pride is the Grape Country Marketplace, where visitors can find just about any and all things grape-related. Pick up Welch’s products and memorabilia, juices, jams and jellies, snacks and pie filling made from local grapes, plus ice cream, chocolate, barbecue sauce, maple syrup and coffee. You can bring home plenty of items from local artisans: paintings and photographs, pottery and sculptures, books by local authors and a variety of gifts created with local finds like beach glass and driftwood from Lake Erie each offer a piece of the region. And, of course local restaurants, bed and breakfasts and boutiques offer options for eating, entertainment, and a place to retire in the evening. Nearby, the Lakeshore Railway Museum is a must-see for railroad enthusiasts and history buffs. The dedicated railroad museum celebrates the story of railroads, mostly focused on the heritage of nearby lines through Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York— from the past up to the present. The museum is situated right next to a busy rail yard, offering visitors the unique opportunity to enjoy safe viewing of railroad operations from the observation area. It’s also home to “rolling stock:” locomotives, passenger cars, dining cars, freight cars, and cabooses of every type can be found in the museum’s collection. This outdoor museum is open during many of the spring, summer and fall months, but check their website before you go to get up to date information. More information is available at www.nechamber.org.
