To get more insight on the competition, Aspire talked to Kate Oberlin, MD, captain of the University of Miami team. How did your team come together? What was your plan of action? Our University of Miami team was united through our expansive and generous alumni population, most of whom serve as voluntary faculty and contribute their time and efforts to improving the department and resident education. What did your team do to raise the money? We raised donations soliciting this network through emails describing the monumental impact that Camp Discovery has on its participants and bettering the lives of children affected by rare dermatologic diagnoses. Did you enjoy the experience? What was your favorite part about it? Fundraising for Camp Discovery was extremely fulfilling, knowing that the efforts are dedicated to a unique group of children in need of special resources. My favorite part about the experience was seeing my community come together to donate for this philanthropic cause, while providing me with ample encouragement to continue our team’s efforts. Why should other residents get involved in Camp Discovery? It is a vital part of our training to learn about unique pediatric dermatology diseases, and Camp Discovery provides novel opportunities to also help these patients strive for an optimal quality of life. I highly recommend becoming involved with Camp Discovery to better serve our patients! For more information on how to get involved in Camp Discovery, visit: www.aad.org/campdiscovery
