FALL 2015 Giving thanks by giving back It is autumn. The days are growing shorter, the leaves are falling, crops are being harvested, and we realize that another year is hurrying to its end. We assess what we’ve accomplished and become more introspective. We begin to think more about the people and things that matter most to us. We give thanks for the many blessings the year has brought, and we think about sharing them in a way that will make the world a better place. Some of us will think of sending help to a faraway place—to those neediest in the poorest and harshest parts of the world. Others will consider helping closer to home, improving the lives of those we see every day. You may even think of giving back to those programs and organizations that have helped you get to where you are today, or “paying it forward” to those who will follow. A gift to the Academy encompasses all these things at once. In the pages of Aspire , you will fi nd stories of dermatologists and others who have reached out to make the world a better place—through and with the Academy. You will read stories of people who have traveled the world to bring critical dermatological care to underserved regions, and those who have reached out to improve lives in their own communities. You will fi nd out how giving has had a positive and transformative effect on dermatologists and their practices, and how the Academy is keeping the specialty vital by supporting the needs of the next generation of dermatologists. We hope that what you read will inspire you to fi nd new ways to become involved with the Academy and its many programs. We also hope that you will share some of this good news with your patients, perhaps by placing a copy of Aspire in your waiting area, so that they might see the good work dermatologists are doing around the world. We know each of you is making a difference in your community—will you share your own stories of giving so that we may share them with others? Let us know today at email@example.com . As this season unfolds, we wish health and happiness to you and to those you love. Sincerely, David M.
