Awe-inspiring: our year in review More than 1.1 million lives touched, more than $7.3 million dollars raised. In our Year in Review issue, you will find many impressive facts and figures quantifying the reach of the AAD’s philanthropic efforts. While our numbers are impressive, behind these facts and figures are stories of lives touched and transformed. We think it’s quite awe-inspiring. You already know, for instance, that AAD’s SPOT Skin Cancer™ campaign offers skin cancer screening and education programs and initiatives aimed at reducing the incidence of skin cancer. That means thousands of people whose cancers would otherwise go undetected are being diagnosed and treated. When you read these numbers, picture the face of the Latino migrant worker who got the chance to see a dermatologist for the first time. Think of the 10-year-old girl who learns her skin disease doesn’t define her thanks to a week at Camp Discovery. Imagine the woman who accompanies her sister to a SPOTme ® NFL event and decides to get a free screening where a volunteer member dermatologist finds a suspicious lesion. The numbers in this issue represent the best in dermatology. We know how hard dermatologists are working to improve skin health, as well as the lives of patients and the public. We also see those efforts bolstered and invigorated by your philanthropic efforts. As you can see on pages 4-11, it is thanks to the hard work of people like you — AAD members, volunteers, and donors — that our efforts to promote healthy skin, healthy lives reach thousands of people every year. When you need to point to some of the positives life has to offer, any issue of Aspire will provide a volume of evidence. And we think our Year in Review issue is definitely one of the more inspiring positives of 2016. We hope you think so, too. Sincerely, David M. Pariser, MD, FAAD Chair, Council on Community, Corporate and Philanthropic Relations Nancy Ali Senior Director, Community, Corporate and Philanthropic Relations SUPPORT AAD In 2015, the Academy set an ambitious fundraising goal of $5.9 million to support the AAD’s overall mission, and to advance dermatology’s efforts to spread Healthy Skin.
