The world awaits you Every time we read the newspaper, listen to the television or radio, or glance through the headlines on our computers, it is clear that we are a global community. Through social media like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, we can immediately see, hear and experience what is happening outside of the communities where we work and live. While modern technology has delivered the world to our doorstep, the media is often dominated with a lot of bad news. Fortunately, there are many inspiring, hopeful messages to be found around the globe, and there is nothing more powerful than fi rsthand experiences that take us to the actual location. We hope to shed light on a few examples in our feature story, where we discuss our travels from Botswana to Belgium to Mexico. These stories exemplify how dermatologists and other dedicated groups and individuals inspire others to make a difference, and show how they are using their expertise to serve others — leaving behind a legacy of impact. The international reach expands to our Corporate Partner Circle member LEO Pharma, headquartered in Denmark, who shares their focus on the reduction of skin cancer across the globe. We’ve also included a fi rst-hand account of a dermatology resident’s mission work in Nigeria. After traveling across the world in this issue, you’ll also want to read about what is being accomplished right here in the U.S. by members who — despite busy practices and hectic personal lives — invest their time and assist those who otherwise would not have access to care. The stories in these pages share how an idea, a vision and a drive now help people in communities throughout the world. David M.
