AAHPM NEWS Applications Available for Scholarships and Mentoring at the 2012 Annual Assembly AAHPM is providing opportunities for members new to the field to attend the Annual Assembly with the help of a scholarship and to identify a mentor to discuss career plans, educational opportunities or research, and clinical issues in the field of hospice and palliative care. One-on-One Mentoring Program For junior or midcareer faculty and practitioners, stu-dents, residents, or fellows, the One-on-One Mentor-ing Program offers the opportunity to speak person-ally with a mentor who can help with issues related to career development, establishment of professional goals, research opportunities, teaching or patient care, balanc-ing family and work priorities, and more. Mentors and mentees will be matched based on mutual interests and preferred experience levels and will meet in person during the 2012 AAHPM Annual Assembly in Den-ver, CO, March 7–10. After their initial meeting, pairs have the option to continue their relationship. The deadline for applications is December 15, 2011 . Palliative Medicine Access Fund Scholarship This scholarship provides financial support (including registration and $500 in travel expenses) to US-based physicians currently working in hospice and palliative medicine to attend the 2012 Annual Assembly. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously attended the Assembly and who have demonstrated both a commitment to the field of hospice and palliative care and the need for scholarship funds to facilitate their attendance. Developing Countries Scholarship This scholarship was established to provide access to quality education for physicians who reside in developing countries (as defined by the World Health Organization) to attend the 2012 Annual Assembly. This scholarship program will provide financial support (up to $5,000) to physicians to learn the latest clinical information and research updates in hospice and palliative care from leading experts in the field. It is intended to facilitate Annual Assembly participation and cover ordinary costs associated with meeting registration, travel-related expenses, and lodging. To learn more, visit aahpm.org. The application deadline is November 1, 2011 . Circle of Life Award Presentation The Academy serves as a sponsor for the Circle of Life Award, which honors innovative palliative and end-of-life care programs. Other sponsors of the program include the American Hospital Association, the Catholic Health Association, the National Consensus Project, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, the National Hospice Foundation, the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the California Healthcare Foundation, and the Archstone Foundation. This year’s winners include: The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Cheektowaga, NY; Gilchrist Hospice Care, Hunt Valley, MD; and St. John Providence Health System, Detroit, MI. Citations of Honor awardees were Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center Palliative Care Service, Lebanon, NH; John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County Palliative Julie Bruno, AAHPM director of education and training, attended the recent Circle of Life Award luncheon and presentation in San Diego, CA.
